Barbarians is an allegorical novel about an imaginary Empire, presumed to be South Africa. It is unclear about who the barbarians are or what threat they represent. The quiet life of the Empire is disturbed by the arrival of a harsh army officer who sets upon a plan of torture with disastrous consequences. There are universal elements in the politics of the place which gives the novel its historical thrust and timeless value. The author J.M Coetzee is a South African writer who has received numerous awards for his work. Barbarians won the premier South African award, the CNA prize, among others, and in 2003, Mr. Coetzee was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

April brings us to thoughts of Spring and being “Green”. Our speaker, Jon Harrison, Mayor of the City of Redlands, will share some of the things happening in and around our town. Did you know some of his committee assignments include citrus preservation, historic and scenic preservation, parks, street trees, and water policy? How about the local area-wide committees he serves on like Crafton Hills Open Space Conservancy, League of California Cities Environmental Quality Steering Committee and the Santa Ana River Wash Committee? As though that’s not enough “Green” he’s on the Board of Director’s for the Inland Orange Conservancy and the Orange Blossom Trail!
The Book Cassette group is seeking new members to join in this fun and educating time to read. One of our three groups started more than 10 years ago and has just begun its ninth cycle of circulation. The CD group begins its third round-robin July 1st. Some 30 members rotate chosen books on a specific schedule every six weeks. At the conclusion, members meet to discuss the books and to choose their new cycle. Each member purchases a book-on-tape or CD and receives the book back at the end of the cycle. The member then keeps the book, or loans it to the AAUW book-on-tape rental table (with those funds going for scholarships), or donates the book to Smiley Library (for a possible tax write-off).
